Have you ever stared at a cozy skein of yarn and thought, “You know what’s missing from my handmade wardrobe? A pair of ridiculously cute, frilly crochet ruffle shorts!”

Whether you are aiming for that retro festival vibe, a trendy loungewear set, or just want to feel fabulous while binge watching your favorite show, these custom fit ruffle shorts are the ultimate summer project.

Grab your hook and your favorite yarn, because we are building these beauty shorts from the ribbed waistband all the way down to the playful flouncy hem!

    Materials and Preparation

    Materials:

    • Yarn: Medium weight acrylic yarn (Weight 4 / Worsted weight), such as Big Twist or any comparable medium weight acrylic yarn. You can choose a solid color or alternate two contrasting shades for bold stripes.
    • Tapestry Needle: For weaving in yarn ends neatly.

    Tools:

    • Crochet Hook: 5.0 mm (US H/8) crochet hook.
    • Measuring Tape: Crucial for taking body measurements and checking stretch length.
    • Stitch Markers: At least 3 markers (use 2 matching colors for side hips and 1 distinct color for the center crotch point).
    • Scissors: Standard craft scissors.

    Preparation Notes:

    • Taking Body Measurements: Before making your slip knot, measure your waist (where you want the waistband to rest) and your hip (the widest part of your hips/buttocks).
    • Account for Yarn Stretch: Acrylic yarn stretches significantly with wear. Subtract 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) from your raw waist measurement and 2 to 3 inches from your raw hip measurement so your shorts fit snug and comfortable without needing a drawstring.

    Abbreviations and Notes

    Abbreviations:

    • ch: Chain
    • hdc: Half Double Crochet
    • dc: Double Crochet
    • sl st: Slip Stitch
    • BLO: Back Loop Only
    • st(s): Stitch(es)

    Pattern Notes:

    • Stitch Consistency: The main body and waistband of these shorts are worked using Half Double Crochet (hdc) in the Back Loop Only (BLO) to produce a continuous elastic ribbing.
    • Turning Chains: In the main body rounds, the ch 2 at the beginning of rows does NOT count as a stitch. Always place your first hdc into the very first stitch space.
    • Work Turning: You will turn your work at the end of each round/row to keep the ribbed texture uniform and prevent the seam from spiraling.

Gauge, Approximate Size, and Pattern Notes

    Gauge:

Exact stitch gauge depends on your chosen yarn, but working tightly in hdc BLO with a 5.0 mm hook will produce an elastic, opaque ribbed fabric.

    Finished Size:

Custom fit according to your individual body dimensions. Measurements are taken while lightly stretching the piece:

    • Sample Waistband: Designed for a 33 in (83.8 cm) target waist measurement.
    • Sample Hip Width: Designed for a 41 in (104.1 cm) target hip measurement (measured flat across at half width: approximately 20.5 in / 52.1 cm).
    • Crotch Depth: Approx 8 in (20.3 cm) from waistband to leg split.

    Special Techniques:

    • Back Loop Only (BLO): Insert your hook under only the back loop of the “V” to create a stretchy, ribbed texture.
    • Hip Expansion Increases: Placing 3 hdc into a single stitch at both hip sides creates a clean, angled increase.
    • Ruffle Formation: Placing 3 dc into every single stitch on the final round instantly creates a dense, wavy ruffle trim.

    Step-by-Step Pattern

    Part 1: Ribbed Waistband

Worked in flat rows of hdc BLO and then joined in a loop:

    • Foundation Chain: Ch 8 + 1 turning chain (Total 9 ch).
    • Row 1: Skip 1st ch from hook, place 1 hdc into the 2nd ch and in each ch across. Turn. (8 hdc)
    • Row 2: Ch 1, place 1 hdc into BLO of each st across. Turn. (8 hdc)
    • Row 3 to Target Waist Measurement: Repeat Row 2 until your piece reaches your desired waist measurement when lightly stretched (e.g., 33 in / 83.8 cm).
    • Assembly / Joining: Align the two short ends without twisting. Working through the BLO of the current end and the foundation chain of the start, sl st across all 8 sts to close the waistband ring. Flip inside out so the seam is hidden on the inside.

Part 2: Main Upper Body & Hip Expansion

Worked in turned rounds around the edge of the waistband:

    • Round 1 (Waistband Setup): Ch 1, place 1 hdc into the same space, then work 2 hdc into the edge space of every row around the waistband. Sl st to the first hdc to join.
    • Round 2 (Regular Round): Ch 2, turn. Place 1 hdc BLO into each st around. Sl st to first hdc to join.

Before Round 3, count your total stitches around. Divide total stitches by 4 to find your quarter points. Place a stitch marker at the left hip and right hip positions. (Example: 118 total sts / 4 = ~29 sts between side markers).

    • Round 3 (Increase Round): Ch 2, turn. Place 1 hdc BLO into each st until reaching the first hip marker. Remove marker, place 3 hdc BLO into that same st, re-insert marker into the middle (2nd) hdc of the 3-hdc cluster. Continue 1 hdc BLO in each st across to the second hip marker, place 3 hdc BLO into that st, re-insert marker into the middle st. Continue 1 hdc BLO in each st to end. Sl st to join.
    • Round 4 (Regular Round): Ch 2, turn. Place 1 hdc BLO into each st around (work 1 hdc BLO into the marked corner sts, replacing the marker into that st). Sl st to join.
    • Rounds 5 to Hip Width Target: Repeat alternating [Increase Round] and [Regular Round] until the flat, folded width of your garment equals half of your target hip measurement (e.g., 20.5 in / 52.1 cm when lightly stretched).
    • Remaining Body Rounds: Remove side hip markers. Continue working [Regular Rounds] of 1 hdc BLO in each st around (turning each round) without any increases until the total vertical height from waistband to lower edge equals your crotch depth measurement (e.g., 8 in / 20.3 cm).

Part 3: Crotch Split & First Leg

    Crotch Divider Chain:

    • At the end of your final body round, chain 10 (or a chain length measuring approx 2.5 to 3 in / 6.3 to 7.6 cm).
    • Sl st into the exact center st on the opposite side of the shorts (halfway across total stitch count) to split the body into two leg openings.

    First Leg:

    • Leg Round 1: Turn work. Place 1 hdc BLO into each st around the first leg opening until you reach the divider chain. Place 1 hdc into each of the 10 chain spaces across the divider. Sl st to the first hdc to join.
    • Leg Round 2 to Target Length: Ch 2, turn. Place 1 hdc BLO into each st around the leg. Sl st to join. Repeat this round until your leg reaches your desired inseam length right above where you want the ruffle to begin.

Part 4: Leg Ruffles, Second Leg & Finishing

    Leg Ruffle Trim (First Leg):

    • Ruffle Round: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). Place 2 dc into that exact same starting st. Place 3 dc into the BLO of every single st around the leg opening. Sl st into the top of the initial ch-3 to join. Fasten off yarn.

    Second Leg:

    • Setup: Turn work. Join yarn with a sl st at the underside seam near the crotch chain gap.
    • Leg Round 1: Ch 2. Place 1 hdc into the corner gap space, place 1 hdc into each of the 10 chain loops along the crotch divider, then work 1 hdc BLO into each st around the second leg opening. Sl st to join.
    • Remaining Leg Rounds: Work the exact same number of hdc BLO rounds as completed for the first leg.
    • Leg Ruffle Trim: Repeat the [Leg Ruffle Trim] round by placing 3 dc into every st around. Fasten off yarn.

    Assembly & Finishing:

    • Weave in all loose yarn ends on the inside of the garment using your tapestry needle.
    • Optionally, thread an extra chain drawstring through the waistband if additional cinch is desired.

    Detailed Pattern Breakdown

    1. Waistband Structure & Ribbing Mechanics

    • Horizontal Rib Construction: The waistband is constructed perpendicularly to the main body. By utilizing exclusively hdc BLO worked in flat rows, the stitch creates an accordion-like ridge that mimics a knit ribbing.
    • Negative Ease Calculation: The structural stretch of acrylic yarn allows the ribbed band to expand up to 15 to 20 percent. Subtracting 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) ensures the waistband stays anchored on the hips without slipping.

    2. Hip Shaping Geometry & Side Expansion

    • Strategic Tri-Increases: Unlike standard amigurumi increases that double stitches (inc = 2 sts), these shorts employ a 3-stitch cluster (3 hdc into 1 st) placed specifically at the lateral hip midpoints.
    • Alternating Rounds: Alternating one increase round with one regular round creates an A-line gradient. This gradual outward flare matches natural body contours from the high waist down to the hips without creating unsightly fabric puckering.

    3. Crotch Separation & Ruffle Flare Dynamics

    • Bridge Extension: The 10-chain crotch bridge provides essential functional mobility and depth, turning a cylinder into a true pair of shorts while preventing tension pulling at the inner thighs.
    • Extreme Stitch Multiplication: The leg ruffle relies on a 3:1 stitch multiplication ratio (3 dc into every single hdc). Converting single column anchor points into triple double crochets forces the fabric edge to wave instantly, creating a dense, bouncy ruffle trim in a single round.

    Pattern Question:

Question: How do I make sure the crotch split does not leave an awkward gap, and how can I adjust the size if my hip measurement needs more room?

Answer: When attaching your yarn to start the second leg at the crotch split, make sure to place your initial hdc directly into the corner gap space between the crotch chain and the body sts rather than skipping it.

Pulling this first stitch snug eliminates any potential gap or hole at the inner thigh seam. If you need additional room around the hips, simply continue alternating the [Increase Round] (3 hdc into each hip marker) and [Regular Round] for a few extra rows until the stretched width flat measurement matches your custom half hip dimension before moving on to the straight length rounds!
